In celebration of the 31st Founding Anniversary of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the 5th National Higher Education Month, themed “Higher Heights in Higher Education,” CHEDRO XI successfully conducted a roundtable discussion titled “Policies to Strategies: Implementing Graduate Education in the Davao Region” on May 21, 2025, at Ateneo de Davao University. Held pursuant to Republic Act No. 7722, also known as the “Higher Education Act of 1994,” this regional initiative brought together higher education institutions (HEIs), administrators, faculty, and stakeholders to translate policies into actionable strategies for strengthening graduate education in the Davao Region.

The event was led by Dr. Jose V. Camacho, Jr., Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Los Baños and Chair of the CHED Technical Working Group for Graduate Education, with the esteemed participation of Regional Director Dr. Maricar R. Casquejo, CHEDRO XI Supervising Education Program Specialist Dr. Christopher Pio O. Pulido, and CHEDRO XI Education Supervisors. Together, they facilitated a robust discussion on the effective implementation of CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 15, Series of 2019, which outlines the policies, standards, and guidelines for graduate programs.

Participants actively engaged in the dialogue, raising concerns and exploring innovative approaches to enhance the quality and relevance of graduate education. Dr. Maricar R. Casquejo delivered a compelling presentation addressing the concerns raised by Davao Region’s HEIs regarding the implementation of CMO No. 15, Series of 2019. Her clear and insightful explanation resonated with participants, fostering a deeper understanding of regional challenges. In response, Dr. Camacho announced that he would elevate these concerns to the CHED Office of Programs and Standards Development (OPSD) for further consideration, a commitment that was met with enthusiasm and optimism from participants. This exchange underscored the event’s role as a vital platform for dialogue and advocacy.

The roundtable provided a dynamic platform for collaboration, enabling participants to address challenges, share best practices, and propose practical strategies to align graduate programs with national and international standards while meeting regional needs. The event’s success reflects CHED’s dedication to fostering partnerships and empowering HEIs to develop high-quality, impactful graduate programs.

Today’s discussion marked a significant step forward in advancing graduate education in the Davao Region, reinforcing CHED’s mission to elevate higher education through collaborative and strategic initiatives.
